Associated Stone & Tile Installers (ASTI) has installed every common type of tile in Greater Boston homes and businesses since 1972. Each material behaves differently, so the setting materials, cuts and layout change with the tile. Below is what we install and where each type works best. You can see and buy tile at our sister showroom, Tile International, in the same Waltham building.
Ceramic tile
Ceramic tile is the most versatile choice for walls, backsplashes and lighter-traffic floors. It comes in every size and finish, from classic subway tile to handmade-look zellige styles, and is easy to clean. We install ceramic on shower walls, backsplashes and floors.
Porcelain tile
Porcelain is denser and more water-resistant than ceramic, so it suits floors, showers and entries. It includes large-format slabs, hexagons and wood-look planks. Large porcelain needs a flat substrate and careful handling, which is where an experienced installer matters; see floor tile installation.
Glass tile
Glass tile reflects light and works well on backsplashes, shower accent walls and pools. It shows every flaw in the wall and the thinset behind it, so we use white setting materials and a flat surface for a clean result.
Mosaic tile
Mosaics are small pieces of tile, stone or glass mounted on sheets to form a pattern or picture. They are used on shower floors for grip, as backsplashes and as decorative panels and borders. We have installed designer mosaic lines such as Daltile’s City Lights collection.

Tile FAQs
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Porcelain is fired at a higher temperature, so it is denser and absorbs less water. That makes it better for floors, showers and entries. Ceramic is lighter and easier to cut, and is a good choice for walls and backsplashes.
Can glass tile go in a shower?
Yes, glass tile is waterproof and works on shower walls and accents. Most glass tile is too slippery for shower floors.
Where can I see tile before choosing?
At Tile International, our sister showroom at 319 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham.
